We are starting to see years of shark conservation effort come to fruition and there are tentative signs of recovery in some populations. At the same time, we are experiencing ever-larger numbers of people living by and using the sea. As we move forward, we need to consider how we can manage the positive effects of healthier shark populations with the potential for human-wildlife conflict in a marine sphere.

Living with Sharks is a new cross-disciplinary project which seeks to identify emerging issues and co-create equitable solutions with affected communities. It will focus on three main groups: beach-goers, recreational anglers and those taking part in shark and ray eco-tourism activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling.

The project will be based on solid social science principles and will draw from the existing human-wildlife conflict work in land-based environments. The outputs will be a combination of reports, communications aimed at specific community groups and best practice guidelines for various stakeholders, including local policymakers, NGO’s, educators, media commentators, ecotourism operators, fishing charters and dive schools.

Here is a piece written by Paul, our CEO, about the project that was published in Shark Focus. Our magazine for members that is published twice a year. Just click on the image below to read it.

Our first step is to research and collate the existing work going on around the world. Be it through education, behaviour change or use of new technology. Then we will drive an innovative and forward-looking, community engagement project that will help prevent rollback of conservation advances and reduce negative human-shark interactions in the future.

We recently travelled to The Bahamas to talk to people about their experiences in living alongside a shark Sanctuary. The water surrounding these islands are home to over 60 species of sharks and rays. It has become a very popular destination for divers who want to experience sharks. Discover what they had to say.
